New Experiences in Senior Living, a Conversation with Sue

Posted on June 7, 2017 · Posted in Grand Oaks

Senior living can often involve moving from one state to another to find the perfect fit. Many seniors move to Florida to escape the unforgiving winter season characteristic of the north. But moving away from home and moving to a new state can be a tough transition to make.

Sue did just that, moving from a community in Virginia to Grand Oaks of Palm City here in Florida last year. Here’s a glimpse at what the transition was like for Sue and her thoughts on moving to a new senior living community in a state she was unfamiliar with.

What encouraged you to look into senior living?

My bones started to ache up north, the weather is much gentler in Florida. My son and his wife live just three miles from here, so I wanted to move to this area to be close to family. I never wanted to be a burden to my children, I refused to move in with them. They’re grown up now, they have their own lives.

What do you like most about living here?

Senior living here is the total package. My suite is nice, I have a balcony where my cat, Ferris Bueller loves to sit. This community is active, the people are terrific. I believe you need to be around people you enjoy, and the people here are great to be around. We’re given a lot of choices, they keep us busy and are very generous about driving us places.

Is there any advice you would give to someone else who is in your situation, who may be moving to a senior living community out of state?

You have to be flexible. I’m adaptable, and I think that helps a lot when you move to a new place. I’m really glad I moved here!
