A Conversation with Dr. Miriam and Russ—Independent Living at Grand Oaks

Posted on May 25, 2017 · Posted in Grand Oaks

Independent living is something many of us take for granted. The ability to do what we’d like to do, whenever we’d like to do it is a privilege we don’t always realize we have. As a senior searching for the right senior living community, remaining independent is, understandably, a principal concern. When it comes to assisted living versus independent living, it can be difficult to decide which option best fits your needs.

When current residents Dr. Miriam and Russ first saw an ad for Grand Oaks of Palm City in the local paper, they realized it might be time to look into assisted living. While the pair are still very independent, they realized that having assistance at their fingertips has its perks.

What encouraged you to look into assisted living instead of independent living?

Dr. Miriam: Russ has Parkinson’s, so we love that there are nurses available 24 hours a day. Russ began choking in the dining room, and before I could even get up, a staff member had already rushed over to help him.

Russ: They cater to every level of care, and someone’s always around if you need assistance.

Dr. Miriam: I was also interested in assisted living from the cooking standpoint. I’ve been cooking for years, and at our last Thanksgiving dinner I cooked for our whole family. I realized I didn’t want to do it anymore. The food here is outstanding!

Russ: Especially the desserts!

Do you feel like the community gives you the ability to remain independent?

Dr. Miriam: Yes, we still have our car. We visit friends, go out to dinner. When we’re here, there’s no pressure to be in any place at any time. We can spend time doing whatever we’d like, which is reading most days. We were both teachers, so we always have a stack of books between us.

Russ: We just enjoy being able to relax. I use the exercise room every day, there are always activities going on, movies playing. You can have as much independence as you want here and someone is always around to take care of you if you need it.
