A Conversation with Dr. Sarah and Lee—Discovering Assisted Living

Posted on May 31, 2017 · Posted in Grand Oaks

Decades ago, assisted living was much different than it is today. Up until the late 1970’s, one of the only options available for seniors in need of assisted living were nursing homes. Between 1979 and 1985, the industry began to focus more on the resident. From 1986 to 1993 communities continued to improve, creating different types of assisted living models to fit the needs of their consumers. Today, assisted living communities like Grand Oaks of Palm City are extensions of home, equipped with premium amenities and services to provide residents with the resources to remain independent and active.

Lee and her mother, current resident Dr. Sarah, looked into Grand Oaks of Palm City after seeing a postcard mailer for the community before it opened last year. As a woman in her nineties, Dr. Sarah had her hesitations about starting over in a new place. But her uncertainties were soon dispelled by the community and its accommodating nature.

What were your initial concerns or hesitations about assisted living?

Lee: In Mom’s era, senior living communities looked more like nursing homes. But she’s starting to understand now that they’ve changed a lot. They aren’t the same at all.

Dr. Sarah: It’s tough starting over again when you’re in your nineties. But assisted living isn’t at all what it used to be, and I’m getting to know that here.

How was your transition from home to assisted living? Does the community empower you to be independent?

Dr. Sarah: Everyone is so cooperative here. The staff is very courteous, if they tell you they’re going to do something, they always get to it.

Lee: Mom is getting used to living in a new community, but she is still very independent. She’s the reason they started the walking club! She walks every morning.

Dr. Sarah: There’s always something to do here. I like to dabble in most things. They give you the freedom to come and go as you please.
